OTHELLO and the sociopath Iago
Othello: new perspectives. One of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, Othello sometimes considered the most painful : “Shakespeare related almost every incident directly to the development of Iago’s schemes and Othello’s escalating fears.”
Love this statement on Othello “The fall of a proud, dignified man, the murder of a graceful, loving woman, and the unreasoning hatred of a “motiveless” villain—” This enticing novella by Shakespeare conjures images of an evil man manipulating the mind of the dignified man and cause him to kill his beloved Desdemona. Influenced by his friend Iago he allows himself to be influenced and manipulated by him.
Wether Othello a victim of a decieitful friend or an employee passed up for a promotion (Iago lost his promotion) He is also jealous or envious of Othello’s charms to lure his beautiful wife Desdemona.
On Iago’s character in OTHELLO:
“Iago has no conscience, no ability to perform good deeds. Iago is a psychopath, and is not capable of forming affectionate relationships or feeling guilt and concern over his behaviour. Unlike Othello, Iago does not have the free will to refrain from wickedness. His nature does not enable him to see the goodness in any one or anything; he is driven by a lust for evil beyond his control. “
